Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to contest certain decisions from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
